Aurora [2015]

Aurora traces the oxidation process of copper plates. Assmann treated the copper plates with a gas burner, and subsequently treated the surface with patina, due to which the range of colouring slowly changed. The hand of the artist is subordinate to the laws of nature: the natural process of corrosion determines how the work will finally obtain its visual identity.

Aurora is the Latin name for polar lights, the coloured glow that sometimes occurs in the night sky in the polar regions. The oxidation process of the copper reminded Assmann of the breath-taking flickering of the aurora borealis.

Aurora is embedded in a context of visual music & expanded cinema and shows through these mirroring screens a distorted reflection at reality.
Just like her other installations, this work is about bringing forward in the material what Assmann calls hypercolours, which are characteristic for her work and are intensified by the light of the sun.

Aurora deals with some form of transition; in the case of the Aurora, a very slow, barely perceptible transition.

Aurora volgt het oxidatieproces van spiegelende koperplaten. Assmann bewerkte de koperplaten met een gasbrander, en behandelde het oppervlak daarna met verschillende patina’s, waardoor de kleurschakeringen langzaam gaan veranderen. De hand van de kunstenaar is ondergeschikt aan de wetten van de natuur: het natuurlijke corrosieproces bepaalt hoe het werk uiteindelijk zijn visuele identiteit krijgt.

Aurora is de Latijnse term voor poollicht, de gekleurde gloed die zich kan voordoen aan de nachtelijke hemel van de poolgebieden. Het oxideerproces van het koper deed Assmann denken aan de adembenemende flakkering van het noorderlicht.

Aurora komt voort uit het denken over Visual Music en Expanded Cinema en toont middels deze bewerkte schermen een vervormde weerspiegeling op de werkelijkheid.
Net als haar andere installaties gaat dit werk over het naar voren halen in het materiaal van wat Assmann hyperkleuren noemt, die karakteristiek zijn voor haar werk en versterkt worden door het licht van de zon.

Aurora gaat over een vorm van transitie; in het geval van de Aurora, een hele langzame, nauwelijks waarneembare.
